Clamoring Voices

Obon Prayer Week - Day 1

Summer in Japan is marked by the cries of cicadas. Rising with the sun, hundreds of cicadas drone vigorously from trees, balconies, or any perch they can find until the sun retreats again below the horizon. The sound can feel oppressive to walk through. When I step outside, I often sense the urge to avoid the green spaces that I love in order to find some relief from the noise.

Many Japanese Christians are likewise surrounded by the sound of opposing voices. Many are the only Christians in their family, class, neighborhood, or workplace. For some, there is a feeling of heaviness or isolation when they visit their family home. Others describe feeling “dull” or as if they and their faith are shriveling up in response to their surroundings. For each of these brothers and sisters, the voices and expectations of those around them can feel deafening.

Yet we know that the Lord is present with His people. Christ, in His incredible mercy and love, promises to be with us “to the end of the age.” He calls us to abide in Him, and promises that He will abide with us.

Prayer Prompts

During the festival of Obon, please pray that our Japanese brothers and sisters might feel our heavenly Father draw near to them through His word and the church. Pray that the promises of Christ might bring peace to their hearts. Pray that the Holy Spirit might help them hear His still, small voice through all the noise of this world.
